How to clean a gold ring

No matter how quality a ring is, it always ends up getting dirty after a while somehow. Given that rings are generally worn on a daily basis, they can’t escape it. Housework, frequent handwashing, doing the dishes… All these everyday tasks tarnish metals as time goes by. To overcome this, there are many ways to clean your rings.

Depending on the metal, a ring will get cleaned up a different way. That’s why we’ve giving you some solutions to clean your yellow gold, pink gold, or adorned-with-precious-stones gold jewelry.

Cleaning a yellow gold ring

There’s nothing easier than cleaning a yellow gold ring. Indeed, there are many granny tips for you to reproduce at home. Of course, we don’t mention the use of Cola-Cola, which is the tip everyone knows and that consists in soaking your ring in it for about 30 minutes.

To easily clean a yellow gold ring, Marseille soap also has properties that give back gold jewels all its shine. Dishwashing liquids are also efficient to remove the dirt. All you have to do is putting your yellow gold ring into a hot water bowl, adding a some Marseille soap or dishwashing liquid, and let it rest for about 20 minutes.

Cleaning a white gold ring

The cleaning of a white gold ring can be done the same way as for a yellow gold one. However, you’ll have to be more careful because white gold rings are covered with a fine coat of rhodium that is pretty fragile and mustn’t rubbed too hard. Rhodium is a protective varnish coat that prevents your ring from being damaged too quickly, and from losing all its shine over time.

Cleaning a gold ring adorned with precious stones

A ring adorned with precious stones will require you to take more precautions when cleaning it. Some precious stones, like emeraude and pearl for example, hardly stand hot water. Ideally, you would meticulously clean your ring adorned with precious stones with a soft toothbrush you would have soaked in lukewarm water mixed with Marseille soap. You can notice that Marseille soap can be used to clean any gold ring!

However, if despite these methods, your gold ring still doesn’t shine or is still a little dirty, we can only advise you to go to a jewelry store and have it cleaned by a professional. In general, jewelers have special products that can’t be found in supermarkets.
